MAUREEN HORKAN, Assistant State Attorney

Barely graduating from high school, Maureen Horkan spent most of her 20's working at a series of low-rung jobs and going from one unsuccessful relationship to another. Deciding she'd had enough, she embarked on a five-year quest to become an Ada Comstock Scholar at Smith College. Initially rejected, she refused to take no for an answer and applied again. Admitted at age 30, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and went directly to law school. Today she's an Assistant State Attorney in Jacksonville, Florida.
